  • What should you provide to your website designer?

What should you provide your website designer if you are going to hire them to design your website? This question is asked almost everytime a new project is started.  So I decided to write a checklist of things that you, as a client, should provide to your web developer.

    Budget:

Don’t be afraid to tell your website designer how much you are willing to spend. This is the basis for negotiation. As a website designer, when a client is prepared to tell me what their budget is, this makes things a whole lot easier. Then I know what type of site, and how much work I should allocate to this website design project.

    Complete list of design requirements:

Its always nice to have lists, especially when the client provides them.  What type of designs are you going to need done with your website design project? Will you need business cards, envelopes, stationary, flyers, brochures? Or do you just need a website?

Don’t just tell us that you “have no idea what layout’s you need, can you just create some and get back to us?” – this would be a waste of time and money for the web developer because there is an unlimited number of items we can create layouts for. T-shirts, coffee mugs, promotional items such as pens, flyers, info cards – the list is endless! So have a list of the items you want your website design layout to match, this will help in the future.

    Target Audience

All to often the client doesn’t understand what this means, what we are saying is who are you trying to attract to your website? If you are selling wheelchair accessible ramps, then obviously you are trying to bring in disabled persons and their concerned family members. Or say you own an ice cream parlor, then you would want kids, senior citizens and family’s to visit your website.

    The Deadline:

Knowing when a website design project has to be completed is very important. The sooner you can tell your website developer the length of time he/she has to complete your project, the better that developer can manage their time needed for the project. I know this sounds silly, but it really helps if you have a deadline, or “publishing date” setup beforehand, that way everyone is on the same page.

    Graphics, Images, Advertisemnts

Please, please, please have readily available any graphics, photo’s, previous advertisments, etc.. This is especially helpful because it gives us an idea of what type of work you want. Even if you are going to hand us those graphics and tell us what you don’t like about them, thats good too.  Having a graphical representation of what you want your company website to look like is an excellent resource for your website designer.

Any types of work done previously (if available)

If you are a new, or start-up company then this does not apply to you. But if you have other design work that was completed by another company do not hesitate to bring, or email those items to your website designer. Even if you have to contact the previous company that designed the artwork, do it.  If you worked with a previous designer, advertiser or graphic company, they should have on file every piece of work they have ever done with you (provided you are in good terms with them). We save all of our clients work, new or old, and then periodically back it up to DVD’s – just in case.

This should clear up some questions you have before starting a new website design project and give you an understanding of what your website designer expects you to have available when inquiring about website design.

  • What are HTML Elements?

An HTML element is an individual component of an HTML document. HTML documents are composed of a tree of HTML elements and other nodes, such as text nodes. Each element can have attributes specified. Elements can also have content, including other elements and text. HTML elements represent semantics, or meaning. For example, the title element represents the title of the document.

In the HTML syntax, most elements are written with a start tag and an end tag, with the content in between. Tags are composed of the name of the element, surrounded by angle brackets. An end tag also has a slash after the opening angle bracket, to distinguish it from the start tag. For example, a paragraph, which is represented by the p element, would be written as

<p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, …</p>

However, not all of these elements require the end tag, or even the start tag, to be present. Some elements, the so-called void elements don’t have an end tag. A typical example is the br element, which represents a significant line break, such as in a poem or an address. For example, the address of the dentist in Finding Nemo would be written as

    <p>P. Sherman<br>42 Wallaby Way<br>Sydney</p>

Attributes are specified on the start tag. For example, the abbr element, which represents an abbreviation, expects a title attribute with its expansion. This would be written as

    <abbr title="Hyper Text Markup Language">HTML</abbr>

  • WordPress Tips, Tricks, And Advice Straight From The Experts

Do you want to have your very own blog? Maybe you have a blog on WordPress but don’t like how it works. There are many different ways you can make your site or blog more appealing to visitors. Follow the tips presented here to create a highly dynamic WordPress blog.

If your post contains a long title, be certain to adjust your permalink. For instance: “Ways Parent Can Control Their kids” is too long. Alter the permalink to include only the keywords.

TIP! Make sure you have a unique template for your WordPress blog. While it may seem appealing to use a common design, your readership may not be impressed.

WordPress is great for adding video elements to blogs. The time spent in preparation is time well spent. Internet users are a visual group. One powerful tool is video because it can convey messages more clearly than the written word.

Be sure to learn all you can before you even install WordPress. The more you plan, the better your results will be. Learn about SEO, creating effective content, and using WordPress and its many features to help ease your workflow.

TIP! Remember to clean up permalinks. Something like, “The Top 5 Ways Parents Discipline their Children” is a little too lengthy.

Create a posting schedule. If you schedule when things must be posted, you’re more likely to actually post them. As a matter of fact, you can create your posts ahead of time and then use the WP scheduling feature to post them at specific times.

Do not automatically assume your changes were not retained when making adjustments to your site. That is probably not the case. You can solve this by clearing the cache of your browser. Your changes should come up if you simply depress the Shift key while you refresh the browser.

TIP! Use Alt and Title tags. This adds searchable text to the posts.

Unless you change the settings, all your posts will be listed in chronological order. You can arrange your list by simply changing the date. To do this, open a single post and look for the date near the top right. Click the date, choose a new one and save the post to alter its position.

You can up your rank with the search engines by taking a bit of time with your pictures during upload sessions. Always remember to add alternative text and title tags. Your title will show up if someone “pins” that image to Pinterest.

TIP! WordPress is great for adding video elements to blogs. While this might take a little extra preparation on your part, it is worth it.

Ensure that it is possible for users to forward articles from your site to their email easily and at will. This is essential for sharing purposes, since not everyone uses Twitter or Facebook while working. Utilize a WP-email application to ensure this happens.

There are many things that go into a great blog. Knowing the right content and plugins can make all of the difference between an average blog and one that stands out. This article should have taught you well. Use that knowledge and start getting others interested in your blog.

TIP! You might find one day that you think you’ve made a lot of changes to your blog that haven’t been saved. If changes are not being saved, there is probably a different problem.
  • Marketing To Your Customers Through Email: A Guide

Are you having trouble getting the results you desire from email marketing? Do you want to utilize e-mail marketing but have no idea where to begin? You are in the right place. The piece that follows includes great tips for composing email messages sure to boost sales and build relationships.

Keep your emails as personal as they can be. Consumers feel like they can relate to a business that treats them in a personal nature, this makes them more inclined to purchase items. You can use their name, mention items they might like based on past purchases, or show them items in their favorite color.

When creating your emails, you should stay clear of utilizing a “Buy Now!” approach. Don’t constantly send out emails that urge your subscribers to buy something. This approach appears like spam and you will lose your customers this way. Trust me, all of them know you are trying to sell a product or service; however, you will realize greater success if you first build a relationship with them and then promote both yourself and what you are offering, professionally. Your customers will appreciate being treated well and will return the favor by buying from you again.

TIP! Only use email marketing to target people who have give you permission to contact them. If someone receives unsolicited email, it feels like spam.

Before you send out emails, make sure to proofread them. You need to make sure all emails and newsletters are correct. You should also test the layouts of your emails to make sure they are displayed properly on different browsers and devices. Double-check your links to make sure people can access your website.

To get your consumers excited when it comes to receiving emails, give them special discounts or promotions through the newsletters that you send. This type of e-mail marketing gives your customers an incentive to participate and they could also have the chance to refer friends. Consider giving even greater discounts to those readers who do refer new customers.

E-mail marketing is capable of delivering amazing results. However, just like other marketing tools, proper use is required to achieve these results. Luckily you have this article and the tips in it that can help you with marketing via email. Use what you’ve learned here, and the results will make themselves apparent quite quickly.

TIP! Make sure your emails are closely targeted. Once you have established some readers, you should then think of different ways that you can entice them to sign up their friends.
  • Back to the Basics of SEO (Part 3 of 3)

    Building a Better Website

Here is the third and final part of the Back to the Basics of SEO (search engine optimization).  This is one of the most important parts of search engine optimization.  A properly designed website can be a great asset to any online marketing strategy and can lay the proper foundation for search engine marketing, search engine optimization, internet marketing and social network marketing campaigns.  When I say foundation, I want you to think of a multi-story building. If you had a building who’s foundation was not level, or was built with inferior concrete and was weak, how do you think the rest of the building would stand up? It wouldn’t!  The same goes for website design and search engine optimization. You must have a strong foundation to lay the ground work for the rest of your SEO strategy.

How your site is organized, designed, and built will affect its search engine ranking on the search engine results page (SERP).  Organize content into themed categories allows you to line up your content by the way people search, you let the search engine know what you are all about.  For example, when designing your navigational menu, put your strong points, or most search terms on the top of the menu.  If your specialty is “Antique Toys” but you also sell “New Toys” you might want to list “Antique Toys” first on your menu.  Remember, that search engines like Google, website crawlers will crawl your website and web design in order from top to bottom.  So listing important services or products at the top will help with your search engine optimization results, ranking you higher on the SERP.

You can group similar pages together into separate directories of folders and sub-folders, or you can create what is called a “virtual silo” by using links that guide a user from one page to the next. WordPress provides a great Plug-In called WP-PAGE-NAVI, as used on XTELWEB’s blog.  This plug-in is an advanced navigational modification that basically lists pages by number, and provides the link on each page.  Google and other search engines love when you have lists of your pages, on each page, that provide numbers, and the infamous “Next Page” and “Previous Page” links.

Other strategies are more technical, so relying on a web developer, like XTELWEB, for assistance might be the best route for your company, or eCommerce website.  The site must also be hosted on a fast server.  The page code should be free of bugs and fully comply with the standards for website structure set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3.org).  Include in the site’s code a special protocol known as a Sitemap, which makes it easier for search engines to scan the site.  A sitemap is basically an Index of all the pages listed in your website. You will also want to make sure that you frequently submit your sitemap to Google and other search engines. Google provides an easy to use tool, called Google Webmaster Tools that you can use to easily submit sitemaps.  Sitemaps can be submitted to search engines as often as they are updated, there is no need to submit a sitemap that is not updated.

  • Website Development: Get Started After Reading These Tips!

There is a difference between knowing how a website works and how to actually build one. Playing around with HTML and adding design features takes quite a bit of skill. A well-designed site can come about with the help of you learning how to go about it properly. If you are ready, start with these tips below that can help.

Testing your website in every browser available is a great way to ensure it works as you wish it to for every visitor. Different browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari or Chrome may not display content the same way; what works in one might not work in another. Before your website goes live, check to be sure that the pages display properly in all of the most popular browsers.

Have a search element included so visitors can search your website content. Those searching for specific information will instantly scan for a search option. If there is no search box, they are not going to take the time to look through all your content. They are just going to move on. Place it near the page’s top right corner since this is one of the first places people usually look for them.

It is imperative to replace old content with new. If you have something on your site that lists an event that happened months ago, chances are you have lost some readers. Readers want to read sites that are current. Keeping old information on your site demonstrates that your site lacks attention.` Set up a review schedule so you are able to update the content, and remove the items that have nothing to offer anymore.

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t overuse JavaScript. It does provide more ways for you to build a responsive and transparent site, but it can be problematic for some visitors. Browsers upgrade to newer versions regularly. Your goal is to have as many website visitors as possible. Also, many people do not enable JavaScript in web browsers. Either of these problems can make the visitor unable to use your site.

Having read these excellent website development tips, you are sure to have a clear understanding of basic website design. You should have the right information to help guide you. Create the perfect site by using the above tips.

  • Website Design Tips: How To Make Your Own Site

Web page design is a popular topic these days. So that means there will be stiff competition in this area if you are looking to make website development profitable. So go through this article and learn what you can to stay ahead of your competitors.

Speed is everything when it comes to the Internet, so make sure that you keep your website’s loading time to a minimum. If someone visiting your site has to wait a while in order for a page to load, it’s likely they will click off your site and leave. They probably won’t return.

TIP! Use fixed-position navigation so your users can navigate your site with ease. Websites that employ this technique have a navigation panel locked in place even when visitors scroll down.

Visitors will enjoy your website, if they can navigate it easily. Links should be highly visible and easy to locate. Menus can also help with site navigation. Make sure each page has a ‘home’ link.

Don’t make page sizes too big. Users with slower Internet connections might decide that the wait isn’t worth it if your site loads slowly. There’s no reason to make viewers wait.

TIP! The 90s called. They want their web frames back.

Good websites are optimized for older IE browsers, like 7 and 8. Many consumers still depend on IE. Workarounds are often necessary when standard elements can’t be rendered. One tip of utter importance when dealing with the older Internet Explorer browsers is to educate yourself on the bug referred to as box model that haunted them for years.

Always make sure navigation is clear and easy. Your navigation links should be easy to see and use to keep visitors on your site. The navigational part of your website should allow users a great experience.

TIP! Be careful when introducing new colors into the design of your website. Your content should be read easily without assistance or adjustment.

Learning website development gets easier when you practice often. So, learn the basics, then create some simple webpages using HTML to reinforce your understanding. You need to practice at some point, so why not begin now?

Many people are looking to learn about designing websites so that they can surpass their competition and succeed. Use what you gained from this article, but be sure to always learn as much as you can about web page design to reach the level of success you seek.

TIP! You want to have a site that is easy to navigate, if you want to attract visitors. Ensure that links are easy discovered and displayed in a prominent location.
  • Tips For Managing Your Blog Properly From The Moment You Launch

If you would like to have a successful bog, consider tying a common theme into your content. Blogging can be rewarding psychically, and for some, even financially rewarding. Whether you would like to write music reviews or discuss politics, you have the potential to make a blog that is valuable to your readers.

Try to continually be available for your readers. Make blog posting habitual for both you as well as your readers. When you connect with your blog readers, they will expect that you will be around. Remember that other people out there will be disappointed if you give up on your blog.

Don’t stuff your blog posts with keywords and don’t overload your blog with Adsense ads, plug-ins or large images. Doing this will raise a red flag on search engines and cancel out your hard work. Keep your writing flowing smoothly and naturally.

TIP! Update as frequently as possible to keep your readers happy. Connections are important in the online world, and this is especially true when you are writing a blog.

Comment on other blogs to increase interest in yours. If you have a Google Reader account, create a folder for blogs in your niche that provide high-quality content. Visit these sites regularly and, when you do, leave comments.

When you make your blog, think about buying a domain name instead of putting your blog on a free site. It isn’t that expensive to do, and will give your blog a more professional appearance. Domain names, especially when they include the actual names of businesses, are generally easier for folks to remember.

Make sure that your information is relevant and appealing. Nobody is immune from daily tasks such as sweeping and cleaning the dishes. Whether your writing is broadly covering a topic or is covering a specific, narrow point, it should always be written in a unique manner. Choose topics that will make visitors feel involved, intrigued, or intent on reading further. Keep in mind that your goal is to attract people to your blog.

TIP! Strive to add some new content to your blog every day. New content on a regular basis is the only way that your blog will experience an increase of viewers.

One way to increase your blog’s visibility is to allow guest posting. This can help you to develop relationships with other bloggers, which can definitely come in handy at times. Do not disregard the importance of building cooperative relationships. You may need a favor down the line, and the blogger whose guest post you hosted may be willing and able to help you.

When feedback is given on your blog, respond to it. However, do not let it emotionally affect you. Not everyone is going to agree with your point of view. Improve your blog through constructive criticism. If you receive any negative or destructive criticisms, respond to them politely. This will display a greater sense of professionalism, and will impress your readers.

As previously stated, any person can write a blog that is interesting if they give new insights about a subject and mix up the content a little. Remember that you can build content out of anything: photos, videos, memorable quotes. Keep these from the article in mind, and soon you’ll be on the path towards blog posting success!

TIP! Don’t ever try to copy something else. The reputation that you make for yourself online carries over into every aspect of your life, including any day job and offline friendships.

Learn about WordPress before you install it. Increased planning leads to a better executed blog. Find out how to use SEO, how to make interesting content, and how you can use all that WordPress has to offer.

Unless you change it, posts will appear chronologically. You can arrange your list by simply changing the date. First, open the posts and look for the date in the top-right corner. Change the date after clicking on it to get it moved from the original position.

Work on creating a better greeting for the top of your WordPress website. This will put a personal touch to your site that you visitors will appreciate. A possible plugin to use is WP Greet Box; using this will make the things feel less robotic.

TIP! Do your posts get comments from lots of people? If you do, scanning through every comment can be hard on you and on your other readers. Look for a plugin to add page numbers at the end of the comments section.

Ensure that it is possible for users to forward articles from your site to their email easily and at will. Not everyone has access to social media sites but may still desire to share your information with others. WordPress has an email plugin just for this purpose.

With luck, your knowledge of WordPress is better thanks to this article. It can be thrilling to see how others use it, yet know little about it. These tips will help you out in a great way.

TIP! Create the best greeting for the top of your WordPress website. You can cultivate customer relationships this way, by including a message on top commenting on how visitors found your site.
