  • How to measure Keyword Density and SEO

How to measure Keyword Density and SEO

Keyword density and SEO, how the relationship has changed. Years ago, when the Internet was young and the search engines less sophisticated, a website designer or owner could simply put up a site and load it with keywords. The site didn’t even have to be exactly relevant to those keywords, just enough to make it plausible. But now, Google and Bing have gotten wiser, more sophisticated and more proactive. Not only do the search engines weed out sites with keyword spam, but sites which over optimize. All of these measures are being implemented because that’s what their customers expect–to find the most relevant, natural content. So, the relationship between keyword density and SEO is changing to meet consumer demand.

    What is Keyword Density?

It used to be relying on a reputable keyword density checker would be enough to optimize content. But this too is fast changing. There are other factors which outweigh keywording. This is not to say that keyword research is passe, because it isn’t. However, it is to say that what you’ve always heard about keyword density and SEO probably isn’t true. You’ve likely been told, read and seen that keyword density and SEO are inseparable components. But that model is undergoing a shift.

Just a few years ago, keywords were seen as a sure-fire way to get higher search rankings. Website designers, SEOers and site owners went through one keyword tool after another, trying to achieve stratospheric results. The rule of thumb for keyword density was about 3 to 5 percent. Now, the metric is much lower. Even pages with 1 percent or less KW density attain high rankings.

    Which Keyword Tool Works Best?

As stated, using a keyword tool isn’t going to give anyone a complete picture of the SEO landscape. But it’s still useful in targeting a specific audience. Believe it or not, the best keyword tool is just writing with the intended audience in mind: so say Google’s Matt Cutts and Bing’s Duane Forrester. In fact, Mr. Cutts goes so far as to say that a site can’t be a “brochure” and sprinkling in keywords people actually search for will get results. Here’s a few other tips for best use of keywording and creating a site which will rank high:

    1. Fill the site with more than a biography, mission statement and company profile language. If someone is searching for a plumber, they’re far more likely to trust and return to a site which as video or written tutorials.
    2. Write content that covers the bases. If your site is about dog training, it stands to reason people will also search for canine behavior, dog obedience, puppy rearing, et cetera.
    3. Don’t rely on the META Keywords tag. It is no longer relevant to Google, and Bing is only using it to identify spammy sites.
    4. Think outside the box. Look at competitor sites and create an element they’re all missing. Keep it relevant and make it useful to visitors, otherwise it’ll be an exercise in futility.

  • Google Search Algorithm Updates

    Google Search Algorithm Updates

Google search updates have been a hot topic of discussion in the SEO community since the release of Panda in February of 2011. Since that time, Google has released two more significant updates: Penguin in April of 2012 and the EMD or Exact Match Domain update released just prior to October of 2012.

The most shocking thing about these updates is all three were substantial in scope. Truth be told, the search giant which derives its name from a mathematical term “googol” or the digit “1” subsequently followed by 100 zeroes, makes algorithm changes regularly throughout the year. Why these were of particular interest is each had a “visible” effect on search.

    Google Search Algorithm Updates

As far as the casual Internet surfer is concerned, these Google search updates don’t have much of an impact. While they might notice slight differences on the SERP, by-and-large, things appear to stay the same. But to the SEO world, these are enormous changes.

The reason Google made such a dramatic change to how it ranks Web sites is simple: Search engine optimizers had learned how to game the earlier algorithm to make low-quality writing more visible than quality content. —CNET

Panda–named after the Google engineer Navneet Panda–was an earth shattering event in the SEO community. Aimed at taking low-quality or “spammy” sites off the index, it was designed to better search results. Penguin was another step in the same direction, but was more targeted. It not only was intended to take low-quality sites off the Google index, but to also remove sites engaging in practices which violated the search engine’s guidelines.

The EMD update furthered the same goal, targeting sites with keyword-laden URLs containing low-quality content. However, it largely spared keyword domains with good content.

Google Updates Search — For User Experience

What’s the point of these Google search updates? The answer is simple: to provide a better user experience. From an SEO standpoint, it has its pros and cons. While these updates do take low-quality sites off the search index, they also changes the rules. That means SEO teams must stay up-to-date with the latest changes in order to provide their clientele with quality services.

How these updates impact search is very relevant to understanding how Google and Bing, see the Internet evolving. It is more personal than most webpages and is considered part of the growing emergence of social media. Use the tips below if blog posting is something you wish to pursue.

  • Web Design and SEO Call to Action Must Haves

Web Design and SEO Call to Action Must Haves

A call to action is an absolute must-have for any website–no matter what its purpose. Visitors who engage stay on the site longer and that not only increases the level of conversions, it decreases bounce rate.

You can spend hours looking at call to action examples, but in the end, they still only be examples of call to action which don’t do you much good. What you really need to do is not copy one or more call to action buttons, but understand just what a CTA is and how it can best be implemented to get visitors to act and follow-through.

And those follow-ups are vital to your online success. Visitors won’t act unless compelled. Nor will they act unless your website explicitly tells them what action to take. It’s not barking orders or coercion, it’s merely giving them direction that will end-up benefiting them in some way.

    Why a CTA is Invaluable

    website call to action
A call to action can increase conversions and decrease bounce rate.

The technical call to action definition is content, images, audio, or video which prompts a reader or viewer to perform an immediate activity. For websites, these can be phrases such as “Talk to Us Now”, “Click Here”, or “Call Now”. In both traditional marketing, as well as website design, an advertisement, promotion or even sales copy is considered to be wholly incomplete and ineffective without a marketing call to action.

What’s more, your website should contain ubiquitous contact information. This is a necessity because some visitors might feel uncomfortable with making a purchase or performing a directed activity. It also gives them the reassurance that there’s a person behind the business and they can ask questions.

Your call to action and contact info should be on every landing page so customers don’t have to spend time trying to find out how to reach you to make a purchase. Invite your customers to call or email you. —Inc.com

What the best call to action does is not “boss” people around. It promises a benefit and encourages interaction between them and a company. With a level of personability, visitors are more likely to follow a CTA rather than ignore it. So, while it has to be compelling, it likewise must be trustworthy.

What an Effective Website Call to Action Should Include

    call to action
Make sure that a call to action is actionable and functions properly.

As the nearby block quote points out, a website that wants to up its conversion rates ought to have two elements on every single page: a call to action and contact information. Though there may be some measure of redundancy in doing so, it ensures visitors have ample opportunity to take action. In other words, a visitor might not want to sign-up for a newsletter but do want to be included in your RSS feed or follow your company on a social network. Or, they might want to reach out about a strategic partnership.

If you want visitors to follow your CTA, then it will have to include certain elements which make it persuading. So, let’s look at the must-haves for a call to action:

    1. Start with the right action. Think about what it is you want visitors to do most. Do you want them to get a quote? Do you want them to phone your sales team? Do you want them to register for a newsletter? Or do you want them to click a link to a product page? Whatever that thing is, that should be the action you include.
    2. Make your CTA actionable. Okay, that sounds repetitious but it’s true. Whatever your call-to-action directs people to do, it should allow them to do it. So, if its an email, then make sure it auto-populates with the right address and subject line. If its a chat button, it has to connect. If its to get a quote, then have it deliver on its promise. In short, it has to function as “advertised”.
    3. Use the K.I.S.S. principle. Follow the old rule of keeping it simple. Give enough information to pique their interest but don’t overload. Start your CTA with an action verb. Words like “Talk”, “Get”, “Contact” and “Call” are good examples.
    4. Make it important; make it stand-out. Your call-to-action should be highly visible on your site. That doesn’t mean putting dozens of CTAs on each page, it means making it conspicuous. Use a contrasting color to make it stand-out and easy to read fonts.
    5. Be consistent with your CTA. Put it in the same place on each page–the header is usually one of the best places. And keep it consistent in language. Repetition works and changing-up the wording might confuse visitors.

If your site isn’t getting the conversions you need, then contact us for a free web design consultation. We can put together an effective call to action for your site and help your business grow.

  • New Port Richey Couple Smashes into Fire Hydrant – Video Marketing

This was a  pretty funny site.  My wife, Tina, just left the house about a half hour before to pick up some pizza and chicken wings that we ordered from Hungry Howies.  She was gone for about thirty minutes and on her way home she saw from a distance, water shooting up into the air!  As she got closer she noticed that  New Port Richey Sheriffs Officers, and New Port Richey Fire Services were already on the scene of what appeared to be an accident.  The police officers and firefighters were standing in the middle of the road trying to figure out what happened.  Another police officer had the couple off to the side and was interviewing them, apparently trying to get to the bottom of this fiasco.  Anyway, there was two sheriffs cruisers, a state trooper and a fire truck, all blocking the middle of the road.

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words? This is priceless. You can just barely make out the couples late model forest green Pontiac Grand AM in the video below.  It looks to me as if the New Port Richey couple has lost control of their vehicle and swerved right into a fire hydrant.  So Tina leaves the scene and immediately comes home. She tells me, “Babe, you have to go see what happened, there is a bunch of Police and Firemen talking to some people who, I guess, hit a fire hydrant – and the water is shooting up past the tree’s!” – I love things like this, and Tina knows it, so she had the keys and my sandals ready to go at the same time.  I almost went out the door without my camera, but I did, and I was able to get these great shots and awesome video footage!

At first I didn’t see the green Pontiac Grand AM as it sit in the grass with a leaky fire hydrant spewing water next to it! The water from the fire hydrant was so thick, and plentiful that it totally drowned out the car.  There is a convenience store next to where the accident happened, and outside a crowd of New Port Richey residents watched in awe. As I walked closer to get a better shot of the accident, one of the onlookers yelled, “I bet I will be seeing that on YouTube tonight!” He was right, without further ado – – – –  here is the video:
